# Organizational Capability Debt

> Organizational Capability Debt is the gap between what an organizational change requires and what the organization can currently deliver. Coined by Dominic Luzi of Management Alchemy in July 2026. Financial debt shows up on the balance sheet; technical debt shows up in the codebase; Organizational Capability Debt shows up in the gap between the org chart and what the work actually requires — and it is the only one of the three most companies have never measured. Left unmeasured it compounds, and it is paid in missed timelines, exhausted teams, replaced executives, vendor blame, and written-down initiatives.

- Definition: the gap between what a change requires and what the organization can currently deliver. Occurs whenever a company commits to a change (ERP selection, integration, market entry, supply chain redesign, business model shift, new hire or department) without accounting for existing versus required capability.
- Coined by [Dominic Luzi](https://dominicluzi.com), Chief Answer Grape at Management Alchemy, July 2026. No known prior use as a named concept in business literature.
- Measured with three questions: (1) what does the change require, capability by capability, stated specifically and cross-functionally; (2) for each capability, is it trainable in round one, trainable with a longer runway, or not present and not developable; (3) who already carries part of the answer, and has anyone asked them.
- Output: a capability assessment mapping each requirement of the change against the current state of the organization.
- Where it shows up: ERP implementation (where the 75% failure rate lives), post-acquisition integration, new market entry, supply chain redesign, new department/function, business model change.
- Governing principle: the system has to serve the people, not the people serving the system.
